MADDOCK PUBLIC SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT

MARCH, 2009 SURVEY SUMMARY

The survey was taken in March of 2009 in 5th – 12th grade along with parents and staff. The survey was taken using  ‘survey monkey’.  Parents were given opportunity to use computers during parent/teacher conferences.    Ninety-two students completed the survey along with thirty-four parent/guardians and twenty-three staff.

The students who responded on the survey had various suggestions for improvement which included having more voice in decision making and having more say in policy decisions.  They indicated they would like to see more diverse ways of teaching and more positive reinforcement by teachers.  The students also thought that the choir hour should be extended and that there should be more time in class to complete homework.  The students considered a variety of items that were well done in the Maddock school which included that they thought teachers respected the students and that classes were well taught.  The teachers were available for help after school and that a tutoring program was in place.  A majority thought that the school had good lunches and that we had a clean very nice facility.  They also felt that we had a safe environment with a good curriculum and that they had many opportunities for extra curricular activities.

The staff suggestions included compensation for extra duties assigned and meetings.  Some behavioral issues with students was indicated along with communication concerns.  They felt that we needed improved writing skills for students along with more work with computer usage for the elementary students.  The staff felt that parent/teacher relations were good and that cooperation and support for each other was a strong point.  They felt that staff members had a genuine care for the students and that there was respect among the staff and they worked as a team.  Technology training is available throughout the year and that a number of staff had taken advantage of this opportunity.

The parents suggested that we ban cell phones from the school and that students needed to be better prepared for college.  Parents thought that the Century 21 after school program was beneficial and that the teachers here at Maddock cared for the students.  They were in favor of the mid term conferences and the format in the gymnasium.  The computer generated grades and assignments on the school web site were beneficial for the parents in knowing their students level of achievement.

The concerns that were noted by the students with a more than 20% percentage of responses included:  The students felt that their peers did not respect those that were ‘different’ and that teachers did not understand their needs.  The students did not feel they were safe from verbal harassment and that they were not treated by respect by other students.

The concerns by the parents included:  They do not feel they know what the teacher expects of their child; and they did not always think their child was safe at school or going to and from school.  Some responses from the parents indicated that they felt higher standards were needed in some areas.

The staff concerns included:  Staff do not always feel they are rewarded for doing a job well done and that they were not in favor of multi-age classrooms at this time.
