Welcome to Mrs. Benson's Page

"Pennies for Patients"
Our students in grades K-12 raised a grand total of $1449.02 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Societ. The fourth graders were the winners of the pizza party with a classroom total of $315.48-that's an average of $35.05 per student! Each of the elementary classrooms collected over $100!! I am so proud of our students and their families!

Enrichment is for students who:
*Read Well
*Perform above grade level
*Have an advanced vocabulary
*Possess logical reasoning and problem-solving skills
Enrichment instruction will be based on a theme each quarter:
1st quarter: "Masters of Disasters"
2nd Quarter:"Fabulous Philanthropists"
3rd Quarter:"Space Invaders"
4th Quarter:To be determined
Week of February 13-16:

The enrichment students continue to be "Space Invaders" as they explore our solar system and learn about its history. Last week, students finished their constellation stories and legends.
Grades 1-3 continue to build background and gain information about the stars and planets. This week they are learning about the moon and its phases. They also experimented with the creation of "craters" using flour and small objects:)
This week grades 4-6 began learning about early astronomers. These are the men who actually lived within the last few centuries, as oppposed to the ancient astronomers who lived 2,000 or more years ago. Students in grades 4-6 will be gathering information, creating timelines, and preparing to debate the theories of the early astronomers. Grades 1-3 will learn about comets and asteroids, and begin their "Space Application" to apply for a trip into space.
We are rapidly approaching take-off for our trip into modern day space exploration!

7th Grade Reading/Writing:
February 20-24
This week we will be concentrating on reading comprehension skills, mainly using context clues to find meaning in the text. Students will also be sharing their stories with the class.
We continue to begin each class with a "few minute edit" to teach and promote proper grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling skills.
Most of the work we do will be in class, so do not expect much, if any, homework in this subject area. The publishing of final drafts may require outside class time to complete.
7/8 Grade Math:
Students must be completing all 30 daily problems for practice. Corrections made to any incorrect answers will receive 1/2 credit back for the student. At this point, mnearly all students are NOT making any corrections, and this is affecting their grades. This is important for two reasons:
*1-Grades can be improved through corrections
*2-Students need to correct mistakes in order
to find out what they did wrong
Most days, and except for test days, students will have an assignment. We have been extending some of the lessons where students are unsure of the content, so assignments are shortened on those days. If they do not complete the problems in class, it will be required homework. Remember that students will not receive full credit for work handed in late.
Maddock School Homework Policy states:
Late Work grades 7-12 - an assignment that is one day late will only be eligible for 80% of the total points earned. Assignments that are later than one day will only be eligible for 50% of the total points. Assignments not turned in with 5 days of the due date will not receive credit.
Homework for the Week of February 13-17
*20--No School
*21--Assessment 11 Retake
*22--Investigation 6--Classifying Quadrilaterals
*23--Lesson 61--Pages 437-439 #1-30
*24--Lesson 62--Pages 444-446 #1-30
These assignments are subject to change if we need further instruction on a concept, and I will try to update if something changes.
